Most small piston compressors use the compressor sheave as the cooling fan, which limits drive configurations and yields poor cooling of the area where it is needed the most - the cylinders. The L-Series units incorporate a dedicated fan and shroud at the "outboard" side of the frame - which directs the cooling air across the cylinders. The "inboard" drive shaft may be fitted with a sheave for V-belt drive, or coupled to a direct drive prime mover.
