SurvAIR® Compressed Air System Analysis

SurvAIR® allows you to measure the performance of your compressed air system and helps take the guesswork out of lowering your compressed air costs.

SurvAIR compressed air solutionsWHAT IS SurvAIR®?

Air Technologies®, the largest industrial compressor distributor in the region, is pleased to offer our advanced compressed air system analysis: SurvAIR®. With SurvAIR®, we can measure, log, graph and analyze all important system factors including flows (CFM), pressures, temperatures, dew points, amps and kW’s. We can install our sophisticated instrumentation for a week or two to collect the pertinent data, and then construct a detailed report from the findings. SurvAIR® helps take the guesswork out of lowering your compressed air costs.

survAIR compressed air system auditHow will SurvAIR® help us?

Compressed Air is your fourth utility and is one of the largest electrical energy consumers in a manufacturing plant. Managing your compressed air system and making good new equipment decisions is difficult—if not impossible—without the proper information. Important questions SurvAIR® can help you answer are:

  • What are the compressed air flow requirements of the total plant?
  • How do they vary throughout the day and week?
  • How much energy does my compressed air equipment consume?
  • How do we sequence the compressors for peak efficiency?
  • Do we have excessive component/piping system pressure losses?
  • How much air is lost in leaks?
  • Are our compressors operating efficiently?
  • Are our dryers working correctly?
  • Do we have enough storage capacity?
  • Do we have enough backup compressor capacity?
  • Are we operating at the right system pressure?

What are the benefits of SurvAIR®?

  • Complete system data analysis
  • Historical Baseline
  • Analysis of Collected Data
  • Allows for Various Pipe Sizes
  • Real time comparative analysis
  • More accurate information
  • Do not have to disrupt production

What are the features of SurvAIR®?

  • CFM, PSI, kW, kWH, and dew point
  • Logging of Data
  • Custom Graphing Program
  • Field Calibrated Flow Meter
  • Multiple points in one database
  • Instantaneous or averaged flows
  • Meters can be installed with system on line

Are you maximizing your air utility performance?

Supply Side:

It is extremely important to measure the performance of your compressors, air dryers, and filters to determine how efficient your compressed air production equipment is. We recommend that the following be performed:

  • Compressor performance (flow rate, pressure, discharge temperature, and kW). We can connect each of your compressors to our portable performance test stand to measure and log the flow (CFM), pressure and kW from to full flow. From this data we will construct a performance graph which will provide the following benefits:
    • You will know which units are best to base load, which units should be used as trim, and which units should be replaced.
    • You will find out if the compressor's controls are working properly.
    • We can spot component problems that require attention.
  • Air Dryer performance (dew point, pressure drop). Our instrumentation can measure the dew point from each of your air dryers along with inlet and discharge temperatures and pressure drop to determine if your dryers are working properly.
  • Filter performance (pressure drop). Measuring the pressure drop of each air filter will let you know whether a filter needs to be changed and whether your current pressure drop indicators are working properly. Every 2 psi of pressure drop wastes 1% of the total energy cost to generate the compressed air.
  • Total system performance. We can install one or multiple flow meters in your air piping to measure and log your total plant compressed air consumption along with system dew point, pressure and kWh. This information will help you to determine the following:
    • How much air does the plant use?
    • How does it vary during the day/week
    • How efficient is my total compressed air generating system?
    • Exactly what are the potential energy savings if new equipment and / or controls are installed?
    • How should your compressors be sequenced throughout the day / week?

Demand Side:

  • Process flow rates we can install flow meters in your plant to measure the air requirements of a specific production line or piece of equipment. This information can be extremely useful if you are planning on adding a similar line or piece of equipment so that you know exactly how much additional air will be required.
  • Distribution system performance. We can measure the air pressure at various points in your distribution system (from the compressor room to the point of use and all points in between) to pinpoint pressure drop problems. Solving these problems will improve productivity and may allow you to lower your system air pressure substantially, thus lowering your energy costs. Once again, every two (2) psi of compressor pressure reduction saves 1% in energy.

How can SurvAIR® cut costs?

  • It is very important to measure your total system leak flow rate to determine the potential savings or a leak reduction project. We can determine your total plant air leakage by measuring the total system airflow requirement when all production equipment is off (if this is possible during the study period). Since a typical plant leaks anywhere from 20-50% of their total usage, the savings potential is enormous.
  • Locate piping/component leaks (ultrasonic leak detector). Our personnel can walk through your facility with our ultrasonic leak detectors to pinpoint where your air leaks are. We will tag these locations so that your personnel (or ours) can repair them at a later date.
  • Measure system leak flow rate after repairs are made (determine savings). We can come back after the leak reduction program is completed to measure the exact savings generated by fixing the leaks. This will quantify savings.

Why should we use Air Technologies® to optimize our air system?

We will prepare a detailed report with recommendations such as:

  • Specific areas of concern with recommendations as to how to fix/improve them along with potential energy savings/payback.
    • compressor/sequence control upgrades
    • equipment upgrade recommendations
    • proper compressor sequence order
    • additional air receivers
    • piping modification recommendations

It should be noted that most of these items are dynamic and dependent upon each other (i.e. flow rates change and pressure drops occur when flow rates are high). Therefore our instrumentation can measure these items simultaneously and over a reasonable time period (usually 1-2 weeks) to get an accurate and complete picture of your system. After the points are measured and the data is collected, the information is graphed out and analyzed by our compressor system specialists.
